THE AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG IS THE PURE BREED DOG
The Australian Cobberdog is a pure breed recognized by the MDBA (Master Dog Breeders and Associates) since 2012, and has its own DNA sequence. The MDBA is also the institution responsible for ensuring correct breeding procedures to guarantee quality of life for future generations of the breed, through good breeder practices, whose breeding criteria must be that the puppies have a good personality and be in good health. Only MDBA breeders have the legitimacy to guarantee that their dogs are purebred Australian Cobberdogs. In turn, this guarantees the quality of the dogs.
WHERE DOES THE NAME AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG COME FROM?
Australian Cobberdog is the name that honours the enormous task that the breed was designed for: to perform therapy and assistance tasks. Cobber is a typical term in Australia used to refer to a friend, which is indeed what the Australian Cobberdog is - a friend that you can always count on.
THE AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG
The Australian Cobberdog is a wonderful family dog even though the breed was developed to get the optimum characteristics needed in order to be excellent at doing its work as a therapy and assistance dog. It is a dog with the ideal amount of energy to serve as an assistance dog, it is very intelligent and quick to learn how to do its work, is hypoallergenic and is available in 3 different sizes. It also shows great sensitivity to children and seniors.
THE ORIGIN OF THE
AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG
Of the first breeders who worked on developing the Labradoodle breed, we have Mellodie Wooley. Along with her mother, Beverley Manners, she set out to develop and consolidate the breed going further than a simple cross between a Labrador and Poodle. However, upon witnessing the popularity and consequential overexploitation of the term Labradoodle and how it was losing its original meaning, they reframed the concept of the breed. They decided to rid themselves of all the negative connotation that had been unjustifiably acquired by the Labradoodle, and created a new nomenclature for the breed that would disassociate it from unscrupulous breeders. The name for this genetically different line of dogs, bred under a breeding programme in accordance with its objective as a therapy and assistance dog, was Australian Cobberdog.
WHY NOT SIMPLY CALL IT A LABRADOODLE?
Many breeders caught Labradoodle fever and their bad praxis began to taint the breed's name, calling any cross of Labrador and Poodle a Labradoodle without any criteria. It was then clear that many of the dogs were too nervous to be therapy dogs, and only some of them were hypoallergenic. In addition to this, confusion regarding the breed grew even more when different clubs and associations set their own rules and standards. No institutions accepted the name Labradoodle in their registry of breeds. The dog's objective had been devalued, and thus arose a need to create a new name to restore the Labradoodle of quality: the Australian Cobberdog.
THE COBBERDOG BECAME AN OFFICIAL BREED
The Australian Cobberdog is a pure breed recognized by the MDBA and it has its own DNA sequence. The MDBA agreed to register it under the condition that the word "Labradoodle" would not be used in its registration, given all the chaos, incoherent generalization and confusion surrounding it. Thus, the name Australian Cobberdog was born to refer to the Labradoodle. It complied with the original objective for which it was created: to be hypoallergenic dogs that did not shed hair, had great intelligence and intuition, was gentle and generous in nature and had great potential to become therapy and assistance dogs. Only registered MDBA breeders that guarantee a breeding programme that complies with the breed standard can issue the Australian Cobberdog pedigree.
